Products

These products can be supplied in the raw state (with scale), or pickled, where required.

The thicknesses range from 1.50 to 5.00 mm for strips and from 1.50 to 12.00 mm for sheet.

In “raw” products (that is, with scale), the surface is opaque, non-homogeneous and characterised by a slight layer of surface oxides which has various colours from blue to black, including possible red oxidation. For these products pickling or sandblasting is recommended before proceeding with surface treatments such as painting or hot dip zinc coating.

For pickled products, the surface, which is generally supplied with a variable layer of protective oil, is opaque and has an even grey colour.

The surface of hot rolled products has a roughness with undetermined values ​​and allows the presence of surface defects (such as small cavities, pores, marks, scratches, transverse bending from winding and colour variations), such as not to compromise the use of the product according to the type of steel, or damage tools and/or compromise the success of any welding.
Requirements for particular uses must take this product limit into consideration by arranging suitable treatments and reconditioning of the surface, where necessary; they are not suitable products for uses that have a high aesthetic value (e.g. high quality chrome plating or painting) without suitable surface conditioning.

Hot rolled products can generally be zinc coated and welded; however, this requirement must be specified.

The particular resilience and ductility given by the low percentage of carbon present within the alloy makes these products ideal for cold forming. Cold rolled products are used in all sectors where a considerable degree of malleability is required for the bending and moulding processes, even harsh ones.

The range of thicknesses for both strip and sheet varies from 0.40 to 3.00 mm.

The products can be supplied with the following surface aspects:
“A”, basic (minor defects allowed such as scratches, small marks, pores)
“B”, improved (applicable only to cold forming grades and suitable for applications requiring quality coating, with no defects on a surface).

The surface appearance depends on its roughness, from rough grey to a bright smooth surface. Different surface finishes are available according to the roughness ranges:
Bright “b” Ra <= 0.4 μm
Semi-bright:“g” Ra <= 0.9 μm
Standard:“m” 0.6 μm <Ra <= 1.9 μm
Rough:“r” Ra> 1.6 μm

Unless otherwise specified, products are supplied in the standard “m” finish. A protective layer of oil is normally applied.

Cold rolled products are generally hot dip zinc coated, cold rolled and weldable; however, these requirements must be specified.

To ensure adequate protection of the products, these categories require additional surface coating treatments, such as electrolytic zinc coating, hot dip zinc coating, chrome plating or painting.

The coating amount typically ranges between 100 and 350 g/m2, although coatings up to 600 g/m2 are available.
Specific weight of the coating 7.1 g/m2 per micron of coating.

The available surface aspects are:
“N”: Normal crystal. Generally not widespread.
“M” : Microcrystal. Smaller crystal and, in some cases to the point of becoming invisible to the inexperienced eye. The standard does not define dimensional limits.

The surface finishes available are:
“A” : Surface with permissible imperfections such as, for example, small lumps of zinc, fingerprints, scratches, small cavities, changes in appearance, dark spots, passivation stains. The surface can be supplied with light rolling (Skin-pass) or in the coated condition, at the discretion of the manufacturer. The surface can vary from opaque, semi-opaque to bright. Specific needs in this regard must be clarified at the time of placing the order. This type of surface is generally not recommended for painting.
“B”: Improved surface, obtained by means of light rolling (Skin-pass), with possible slight imperfections such as, for example, skin-pass marks, light scratches, light passivation stains; generally not very sensitive to the touch. The surface is opaque and suitable for painting.
“C”: High quality surface, obtained by means of light rolling (Skin-pass), practically free from touch-sensitive defects. The surface is opaque and the one that has been controlled is suitable for the application of a high quality paint.

The coating is made up of 55% aluminium alloy, 1.6% silicon and the remaining percentage is zinc.
The amount of coating typically ranges between 100 and 185 g/m2.
The specific weight of the coating is 3.8 g/m2 per micron of coating.

The surface appearance has a variable size crystal formation with a characteristic metallic lustre.

The surface finishes available are:
“A” : Surface with permissible imperfections such as, for example, small lumps of zinc, fingerprints, scratches, small cavities, changes in appearance, dark spots, passivation stains. The surface can be supplied with light rolling (Skin-pass) or in the coated condition, at the discretion of the manufacturer. The surface is generally semi-opaque or bright. Specific needs in this regard must be clarified at the time of placing the order. This type of surface is generally not recommended for painting.
“B”: Improved surface, obtained by means of light rolling (Skin-pass), with possible slight imperfections such as, for example, skin-pass marks, light scratches, light passivation stains; generally not very sensitive to the touch. The surface is opaque and suitable for painting.
“C”: High quality surface, obtained by means of light rolling (Skin-pass), practically free from touch-sensitive defects. The surface is opaque and the one that has been controlled is suitable for the application of a high quality paint.

The amount of coating typically ranges between 60 and 150 g/m2. The specific weight of the coating is 3.0 g/m2 per micron of coating.

This type of coating is particularly suitable for high temperature applications of up to around 650°C (for example, hoods, oven components, etc.).

The surface appearance has a variable-size crystal formation, which can even be quite evident and gives the surface an even opaque aluminium grey appearance.
